New ferry operator Gotlandsbåten, who will provide service to the Swedish island of Gotland, have chosen Carus to solve their booking and check-in requirements. Carus’ central role in the ferry industry and extensive experience with ferry industry operational processes attracted the dynamic team of Gotlandsbåten to select Carus as their key supplier for their sales, ecommerce and port operation systems.
A team of Gotland islanders along with ferry professionals with combined experience from setting up businesses in holiday parks and airlines, as well as ferry companies, are currently working hard to put everything in place to start selling ferry tickets for the coming summer season for the new service to Gotland. The operation will be running in direct competition to the existing heavily subsidized ferry service, but will focus on the summer season as the structure of the state subsidies has led to very expensive ferry travel costs to the island during the peak season, which in turn has resulted in decreased numbers of holiday travelers to the island and reduced incomes for the accommodation and attraction owners on Gotland.
Important for Gotlandsbåten when choosing their IT partner was that they must be able to start selling the summer season tickets as soon as possible, since holiday makers are already planning their summer travels. Carus have therefore focused the initial stages of the implementation project on setting up the ecommerce solution from the full Carus Reservations and Carus Port software suite. Gotlandsbåten will be using Carus Managed Services so they can concentrate on getting the business started without any concerns over purchasing and maintaining an IT infrastructure.
Carus will also provide their portable check-in and boarding solution which utilizes Motorola handheld computers, dramatically reducing the requirement Gotlandsbåten will have for fixed terminal infrastructure.
“We are very happy to work with the Carus team in this exciting project and appreciate the long experience in the practical details of ferry operations, which will guide us in setting up a cost efficient and professional ferry service” says Lars Meijer, CEO of Gotlandsbåten.
“We really enjoy the challenge which was presented by Gotlandsbåten, delivering our systems and services within record time has become a habit for us” says Anders Rundberg, CEO of Carus. He continues: “With all contracts signed in the last days of November, we plan to have their first booking and ticketing website up and running before the end of the year, which will be one of the quickest project starts we have ever done”.
Gotlandsbåten is a new ferry operation that is set up between the island of Gotland and the Swedish mainland to provide a competitive alternative to the state subsidized ferry services to the island. Gotlandsbåten will operate between Visby and Västervik with a newly refurbished ferry on a seasonal traffic, operating primarily in the summer months.
The concept will be low-cost with all bookings done online and quite strict amendment and cancellation rules. The company is owned by almost 200 private investors from Gotland and Västervik. The ultimate goal for the operation is to provide more tourists to the island.
